Original Northern Uganda Handmade Quilts
These quilts have all been hand pieced and hand quilted by the women of northern Uganda.
NUWOCSI is working with women of northern Uganda to provide them with the opportunity to gain a marketable skill and to provide a source of income for themselves and their family. Most of these women endured total disruption of their lives and that of their families as 20 years of war left vast destruction and devastation, both economically and socially. Most of these ladies have limited, if any, schooling and are living in extreme poverty after surviving many years in IDP camps. Many of these women are raising children or grandchildren on their own.
However, these women are very determined to improve their lives and are anxious to learn a new skill or trade that will make a better existence for themselves and their children.
I hope you will consider purchasing one of these handcrafted quilts. In doing so you will be improving the lives of these women and their families. All money earned from the sale of quilts go directly to members of this project. By purchasing one of our quilts you will be helping these women to pay school fees for their children, increase their agriculture businesses, seek and pay for medical care for themselves and family and to improve their lives in general. Your purchase also helps the whole village because as these women increase in their quilt making they are able to hire others to work in their gardens, thus providing income for another person.
Each Quilt is hand sewn and hand quilted with many being designed by the quilter herself. Each is a unique and one of a kind Quilt.
The fabric used in our quilts are 100% African wax and Kitenge fabrics. The printing on the Kitenge cloth is done by a traditional batik technique. These are known as wax prints and the design is equally as bright and detailed on the opposite side of the fabric. Many of the designs have a meaning. A large variety of religious and political designs are found as well as traditional tribal patterns.
The fabric come from East Africa countries, such as DRC, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and can even come from Nigeria and Ghana. We sometimes use fabric that has been screenprinted or dyed here in Gulu by local artists
The money from the sale of these quilts goes directly to the lady or ladies who made the quilt and to their program. We have the women put 10% into a personal savings account that they can use for emergency expenses.
Each quilt has a quilt label and comes with a photo of the lady or ladies who made it.
The price quoted includes the cost of shipping.
Please allow 2 to 4 weeks for shipping.
Wallhangings, Lap covers, Bedsize, Ladies Bags and More!
We can do custom orders in the size you want and the colors you prefer. Our fabrics and prints are constantly changing so we can not make a duplicate of any the quilts you see here, using the same fabrics. Each quilt is unique.
